Released in April 2019, the Samsung Galaxy A70 is by all manner and definitions, a highly spec’d midrange. Beautiful, elegant and powerful, no corners were cut to get this phone out. It caters to a certain discerning kind of clientele, as does most of the diverse devices in the Samsung A series stable. So, what’s so great about it? Let us take a dive.
The Samsung Galaxy A70 comes with a 6.7 inches super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen, with an infinity U waterdrop design to accommodate the front-facing camera. It achieves a screen to body ratio of 86%. The PPI density is 393 with the screen brightness an impressive 500 nits. The front glass is Corning Gorilla 3 protected and the frame and back are hardened plastic. At the back, you will find the left top-aligned triple camera set up. The security biometrics include an under-display fingerprint scanner and FaceID face unlocking. At the bottom of the phone, we find a downward-firing speaker, a USB-C connector and luckily, a 3.5mm headphone jack. It weighs in at 183g and is 7.9mm thick.
The Samsung Galaxy A70 comes with the well-optimized midrange Snapdragon 675 11nm, flanked by an octa-core up-to 2GHz Kyro 460 CPU and an Adreno 612 GPU. The memory configurations onboard are 6/8GB for RAM and 128GB for ROM UFS 2.0 mass storage. In addition, it has a dedicated microSDXC slot enabling extra memory expansion of up to 1T. The performance is fluid, snappy and fast. A combination of a powerful SoC, a very clear screen and a high memory configuration delivers very fast experience. It easily handles even graphics-intensive tasks such as gaming like a pro.
The Samsung Galaxy A70 comes with a triple camera set up, starting of with a 32mp 26mm wide lens, an 8mp 12mm ultra-wide shooter and a 5 mp depth sensor. The photos are great, detailed and rich in colour. The edge detection in portrait mode is impressive, and so is the bokeh distance variance. It can shoot 4k video in 30fps, 2k video in 30fps and full HD in 30/60 fps, with support for HDR and panorama. The front-facing camera is a 32mp 26mm camera, an above-average lens, which delivers beautiful pictures, with great portrait mode, capable of shooting full HD in 30fps. It handles low light or over-exposure handsomely, with in-built night mode.
The Samsung Galaxy A70 comes with the bigger non-removable Li-Po 4500mAh battery. This is an improvement from the usual 4000mAh battery most of the devices come with. It is more than sufficient, surviving the whole day without charging, even for a power user, with a little left-over. Over and above, it comes with the even better 25W fast charging, which charges the phone in less than 2 hours, with the brick and cable coming with the box. It’s worth noting that this phone has no wireless charging. The battery endurance stands at 103 hours.
Out of the box, the Samsung Galaxy A70 comes with Android 9 Pie with Samsung’s One UI custom skin. It is slated for the Android 10 with One UI 2 update, so that shouldn’t be a problem all. The experience is very fast and fluid. The custom skin also has one or two tricks up the sleeve, not unlike the Samsung ecosystem many have come to love. The bloatware is visibly reduced, giving it a cleaner and lighter look.
It’s telling that the Samsung Galaxy A70 is targeted at a premium midrange demographic. It does not cut any corners when it comes to specifications. It supports Bluetooth5, nano sim dual standby and, NFC. It has no IP ratings for water or dust-proofing, though it’s advertised as splash-proof. It comes in coral, blue, black and white colours.
