The entry-level market segment in the smartphone has increasingly become a major battlefield. Many multinationals that didn’t give it much thought are suddenly scrambling for the mass market as smartphones becoming cheaper, hence the need to offer greater value at lower prices. And in Samsung’s arsenal lies the Samsung Galaxy A10s, launched in August 2019, a very reasonably priced device. Here’s why it’s as big a contender than most.
The Samsung Galaxy A10s comes with a 6.2 inch IPS LCD screen, with the Infinity V design to accommodate a front-facing selfie camera. The narrow bezels and a smaller chin helps the Samsung Galaxy A10s achieve a decent screen to body ratio of 80.7% with a PPI density of 271 and a resolution of 720 x 1520p. The screen warps into the middle plastic frame on to the equally plastic where the dual camera bump lies along with the centrally placed fingerprint scanner. The design doesn’t feel cheap and the device is easy to hold. The screen is bright enough for everyday use, but you might avoid using it especially direct sunlight. Its 7.8mmthick and weighs in at 168 grams.
The Samsung Galaxy A10s chooses to go with the otherwise budget MediaTek MT6762 Helio P22 12nm chipset, in addition to the octa-core 2.0GHz Cortex A53 and a PowerVR GE8320 GPU. It comes with the 2/32GB memory configuration but we luckily have a dedicated memory slot that can ramp the internal memory by an extra 512GB. The SoC might be entry-level but it handles pretty decently. The average user wouldn’t be disappointed but the power user wouldn’t be impressed either.
The camera system in the Samsung A10s is a dual camera set up, starting off with a 13mp wide-angle primary camera coupled with a 2mp depth sensor. These particular shooters are decent at best, but it’s a great offering at this particular price point. The photos are average and, in good lighting, very usable. They can only shoot images at 720p but the video can bump up to 1080p at 30fps. The front-facing camera is an 8mp f/2.0 lens, capable of pretty decent photos, but nothing award-winning.
Being a budget device, the Samsung Galaxy A10s surprisingly comes with the standard but huge 4000mAh non-removable LI-Po battery. This promises to be a lot of battery life, considering the Samsung Galaxy A10s is not a power device. The disappointment comes with the microUSB charger so there is no fast charging here. That said, this kind of battery on such a budget device offers a lot of battery hours, easily enough to last a day, even for a power user. It’s a well compiled compromise worth taking.
The Samsung Galaxy A10s comes with Android 9Pie straight of the box with Samsung’s One UI. It’s a pleasant experience, except for a little bloatware that doesn’t feel right considering this budget device could do with a little lighter OS. That said though, it is not overwhelming on the phone and the experience is as fluid as on any other phone. It is very well optimized and a steal considering the offer price.
The Galaxy A10s is great budget device, offering just the basic configurations but in great design and an excellent battery capacity choice. It is a great entry-level device and most not inclined to powerful phones would greatly appreciate it. On top of that, it supports 4G and has that elusive 3.5mm headphone jack.
