Samsung
Quietly released in the month of December 2019, the Samsung Galaxy A01 was pushed as an entry-level smartphone with loads of memory and a little of everything else. A very mixed bag from most of the other Samsung offerings, the Samsung Galaxy A01 is quite an interesting device. Let’s take a look.
The Samsung Galaxy A01 comes with a 5.7 inch, Infinity V IPS LCD capacitive screen, with Corning Gorilla 5 on the front with a plastic middle frame. The back is also plastic but it conspicuously lacks the back fingerprint sensor, though one can choose to unlock the phone with FaceID. The screen has a not so thin bezel in addition to the chin at the bottom, getting the screen to body ratio to about 77.8%, with a PPI density of 301. The back hosts the left aligned dual-camera bump that we will get to in a few. The resolution maxes out at 720 x 1560 pixels. Below the screen ports the downward-firing speaker, the micro USB port and a 3.5mm headphone jack. It’s 8.3mm thick and weighs in at 146 grams.
Unlike many Samsung devices, the Samsung Galaxy A01 went with the Mediatek MT6762 Helio P22, an entry-level chip with an octa-core Cortex CPU which revs up to 1.95GHz and PowerVR GE8320 GPU. Paired up with the SoC is the rather generous 6/8GB RAM and 128GB internal storage, not to forget an expandable dedicated memory slot of up to 512GB via microSD card. This one is an interesting setup and it totally should be able to handle everyday tasks with ease and the memory should be more than enough.
The Samsung Galaxy A01 comes with a dual camera set up, the primary camera being a 13mp wide-angle lens and a 2mp depth sensor. It’s capable of taking HD images and 1080 video at 30fps. The images are bound to be decent and not of the highest quality, but they are usable. The front-facing camera is a basic 5mp camera. The images can be grainy and not colorful enough, but nothing some good lighting can’t improve.
The Samsung Galaxy A01 has a rather small 3000mAh non-removable Li-Po battery, considering 4000mAh has become the new standard. There is no fast charging or wireless charging in this series so one has to contend with the 5W charging, which takes about 2.5hours to charge the phone from 0-100%. The battery might not be much but it can last the average user a full day while the power user might need to add some juice somewhere in between.
The good news is that the Samsung Galaxy A01 comes with the new Android 10 operating system with Samsung’s custom One UI 2. The experience is fluid and smooth and the extra RAM should ease off any lag that would come with a little heavier use. Bloatware is minimal but still not comparable to stock Android
The Samsung Galaxy A01 supports 4G, has standby dual nano SIM, FM radio and active noise cancellation with a dedicated mic. It does not support nor have any IP ratings for dust or water-proofing. It comes in Black, Blue and, Red. It offers an interesting bag of budget phone choices that are hardly found elsewhere which makes an interesting device to try out.
